Construction of the Saenamteo Catholic Holy Place of the Martyrs began in 1984 to mark the 200th anniversary of the first Catholic church in Korea, and was completed after three years. Saenamteo is the site where Catholics were executed in 1801, a time in which Catholics were oppressed in Korea.
Martyrs executed at Saenamteo include the first priest in Korea Father Andrew Kim Taegon, the first Chinese priest in Korea Father Ju Mun-mo, and Laurent Joseph Marius Imbert from France.
